Heritage Day once again brang South Africans together around one of the country’s most treasured traditions – the braai. This year, Simba is turned up the heat with the Big Save Braai Day, bringing together food, music, culture, community and the unmistakable spirit of South African togetherness.
The celebration formed part of Simba’s broader Heritage Month campaign, which has seen the brand invite South Africans from across the country to share their personal “Roarrs” – the moments, memories, people and traditions that make them proud to be South African.
From stories rooted in family and community to personal moments of triumph, the Roarrs have captured the diverse voices and experiences that make up the South African story.
Now, those individual Roarrs came together around one massive fire as South Africans celebrate Heritage Day on 24 September.

From individual Roarrs to a shared celebration
At the heart of the campaign is the idea that heritage is more than history. It lives in everyday experiences – in the food people prepare, the music they enjoy, the languages they speak, the communities they belong to and the memories they create with loved ones.
For many South Africans, the braai represents exactly that.
It is a place where generations gather, conversations flow and differences are put aside in favour of connection. Whether it is a family gathering in the backyard, friends meeting at a park or neighbours coming together in the community, the braai has become an important part of the country’s social fabric.
Through the Big Save Braai Day, Simba is used this familiar tradition to create a national moment of celebration while highlighting the stories and voices that make South Africa unique.
The stories behind the Roarrs
Ahead of Heritage Day, Simba embarked on a storytelling journey to uncover some of the people behind the Roarrs submitted from around the country.
Four compelling Roarrs were selected, giving the campaign a human face and creating an opportunity for the individuals behind these stories to share what inspired them to speak up.
The initiative reflects the many different ways South Africans express pride in their heritage. While the stories may be different, they are connected by a common thread – a desire to celebrate the people, places, experiences and traditions that have shaped their lives.
The selected Roarrs also provide a glimpse into the personal stories that exist behind a national celebration, reminding audiences that heritage is experienced differently by every generation and community.
A Heritage Day built around connection
The Big Save Braai Day the energy of Heritage Day to life through an immersive consumer experience centred around food, entertainment and community.
With the braai serving as the centrepiece, the celebration creates an environment where people can eat, connect, share stories and celebrate the things that bring them together.
For Simba, the occasion provides an opportunity to move beyond simply celebrating a calendar date and instead create a meaningful cultural moment that consumers can experience together.
The brand’s involvement also taps into the emotional significance of the braai in South African households.
It is not simply about what is on the grill. It is about who is standing around it.
It is about parents passing traditions on to their children, friends reconnecting, grandparents sharing stories and communities creating memories. It is about the soundtrack playing in the background, the familiar smell of food cooking and the conversations that continue long after the meal has been served.
Celebrating South Africa’s diversity
South Africa’s heritage is made up of countless cultures, languages, traditions and personal histories. The Simba campaign acknowledges this diversity by giving everyday South Africans a platform to share what heritage means to them.
The Roarrs campaign demonstrates that there is no single definition of South African pride.
For some, it can be found in family traditions. For others, it can be music, sport, food, township culture, rural roots, language, friendship or the resilience of their communities.
By bringing these stories together through the Big Save Braai Day, Simba is creating a celebration that reflects the country’s diversity while focusing on a universal idea: togetherness.
One nation, one massive fire
The Big Save Braai Day turned country’s collective Roarrs into one shared celebration.
The campaign brang together two powerful elements of South African culture – storytelling and the braai – creating a platform for people to celebrate where they come from while connecting with those around them.
From the Roarrs submitted by South Africans across the country to the stories of the four selected individuals, the campaign has placed people at the centre of its Heritage Month celebration.
And as the fires are lit and families, friends and communities gather, the message is simple: heritage is something that is not only remembered – it is lived, shared and celebrated.

This Heritage Day, Simba and Big Save are inviting South Africans to bring their stories, their appetite and their spirit of togetherness to one massive celebration.
Because when individual Roarrs come together, they can create something much bigger – one powerful South African celebration around one massive fire.
