Smart geyser will provide energy savings of up to 90% and reduce household electricity bills by up to R2 200 a month for South African homes.
Nedbank, in partnership with retail and technology partners, is introducing a water-heating solution that promises to reduce electricity consumption by up to 90%, lower electricity bills by up to R2 200 a month, and pay for itself within 12 to 18 months (depending on its size, utility costs and use).as South Africa’s premier green bank and pioneer in environmentally and climate-friendly solutions, is excited to bring a solution that contributes to South Africa’s quest to become a low-emissions economy’, says Dean Harvey, Executive of Beyond Banking at Nedbank.

The integrated heat pump (IHP) geyser is powered by advanced heat pump technology, using 0.63 kW of power to provide the same amount of hot water as a conventional geyser, which consumes up to 4 kW,Premier bank is delivering the IHP geyser in partnership with Power4Less, which developed the technology, and will roll it out through Nedbank’s Avo SuperShop and outlets such as Massmart-owned Builders Warehouse.
Nafisa Fareed, CEO of Power4Less, states: ‘We have created a world-class ecosystem to facilitate the deployment of the most efficient water-heating system the country has seen. By addressing current trends and the need to cut costs in tough economic times, we believe this product will help South Africans save money, improve the environment, and enhance their lives.’
Harvey notes that in the average South African home, water heating through a geyser accounts for a significant portion of the monthly electricity bill. ‘With electricity tariffs increasing each year, households need smarter solutions to manage their costs,’ he says. ‘The IHP geyser offers immediate relief by dramatically lowering water-heating expenses. It is a reliable and eco-friendly option that pays for itself quickly and then saves you money immediately with returns over the long term.’
Unlike traditional geysers, which run for hours to maintain water temperature, and solar geysers, which do not heat water sufficiently in cold weather or overcast conditions, an IHP geyser provides a steady flow of hot water while using very little electricity.
The advanced IHP geyser technology ensures reliable temperature control and safety. There is no risk of bursting, and the durable, stainless-steel construction means it can withstand harsh conditions and has an average lifespan of 10 years. It is also wifi-enabled and equipped with smart technology, allowing users to control and monitor it remotely through a handy mobile app.
Beyond the significant cost savings, installing an IHP geyser is also a greener option for families and businesses who want to reduce their carbon footprint. The installation of just 10 000 IHP geysers in homes and businesses can significantly impact the environment by removing 29 MW from the grid, reducing coal usage by 371 000 tons, and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 69 000 tons.
‘The IHP geyser isn’t just another appliance; it’s a game-changer for families and businesses looking to manage their energy costs in today’s challenging economic climate,’ Harvey says. ‘It’s not just about reducing your monthly or operational expenses; it’s about making your home or business resilient in a sustainable manner.’bills by up to R2 200 a month for South African homes.
